Community Action Plans 2009

After meeting at our April forum days in 2009, the Community Action Plan (CAP) Regional groups have been meeting to plan out how to achieve the goals they discussed initially. Below are the ideas from our CAP plans for that year.

Central Brisbane:

The Central Brisbane group discussed the idea of putting together drug education presentations for schools – creating a Drug Education Scheme that is for youth by youth.

Northern Brisbane:

North Brisbane decided to pursue the forming of the North Brisbane Youth Committee.  Youth Members will form the initial committee representing their respective electorates.  The Youth Committee will work with Local, State and Federal levels of Government to put forward youth projects.

Southern Brisbane:

Southern Brisbane looked at the idea of running a Radar “FPQ themed” manned booth.  Ideas were also put forward to hold events to help develop the relationship between police and young people or events to help welcome international students to the area.

Western Brisbane:

This group discussed the organisation of a youth event for their region.  Tasks were allocated and this group really hit the ground running!

Eastern Brisbane:

The East Brisbane group decided to organise an awareness stand at a function held by one of their schools in August.  The stand will have flyers and pamphlets about everything from the Red Cross to Volunteering Australia for people to have a look at and become more informed about opportunities to get involved in the community.

South West Brisbane:

Many issues to be addressed in the region were discussed with some of the major themes including public transport, lack of services for disadvantaged people, drug problems and gang violence, a lack of facilities for youth, the need for more cultural events and the misrepresentation of culture.  The group decided that holding multicultural events would be great for the region and began planning such an event.

Gold Coast:

Reducing homelessness was a major initiative of this regional group, as well as the issue of youth depression, binge drinking, violence, urban development, graffiti, and the need for better disability services.  The group discussed avenues available to them such as their Members of Parliament, the Gold Coast Junior Council, Homelessness Connect and Rosies Queensland.

Sunshine Coast:

The Sunshine Coast group discussed public transport in their area, gang violence between schools and in general in the area, and entertainment options.

Central Coast:

Public transport, the older section of the community, events to bridge the generational gap, after school activities were all discussed in this group.  Also discussed were boredom, drugs and alcohol in Yeppoon.  Contacting the Youth Development Officer on the local council was suggested.

Western Queensland:

Western Queensland decided that projects and action plans would be more appropriate as solo endeavours.  Each youth member will work individually on a Community Action Plan for their electorate.  The alcohol subculture was discussed along with opportunities with Family Planning Queensland, a current lack of youth services and Youth Councils.

Southern Queensland:

This group decided that the best action plan for them would be the formation of youth councils in their area:  the Somerset Regional Youth Council and the Toowoomba Regional Youth Council, modelled on resources predominantly provided by the recently formed Lockyer Valley Regional Youth Council.

North Queensland:

The Youth Members in the North Queensland regional group discussed the opportunity for schools to become involved with IDPA – fundraisers, awareness events, radio and TV community noticeboards.  The group also discussed the need to raise awareness of depression.

Far-North Queensland:

Far North Queensland Youth Members discussed the promotion of social awareness through fundraising, goal setting, working with the Youth Advisory Council, local Councils, PCYCs, schools and youth organisations. Also brought forward were ideas for volunteering through activities with socially disadvantaged youth including movie nights, camping, swimming, sports days and bowling.  The group decided to look into sponsorship options, research groups to approach for support and resources and find out about existing programs.
