Success of 2008 Residential

The 2008 Youth Members ought to be congratulated for contributing to another very successful year of the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. Eighty-seven young people from electorates across Queensland gathered in Brisbane for the 13th program from June 30 to July 5 2008. Throughout the week long Residential at YMCA Camp North Pine, the Youth Members held fiery debates in Parliament House, met the Governor, elected their own leaders, took flying leaps down slip'n'slides, developed practical plans for tackling issues in their regions and made many new friends. This week provided an opportunity to experience political life and advocate for change in an apolitical way in the company of other very talented young people. For many young people, this program provides a life-changing experience. It is an amazing learning experience but it is also a lot of fun!

Youth Governor

Congratulations to Christopher Piggott-McKellar who has been appointed as the Youth Governor for the 2008 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament! The appointment is testament to the valuable contribution Chris has been able to make to the program over a number of years. Chris, originally from Yeppoon, started with the program in 2005 as Youth Member for Keppel. Returning as Youth Member for Robina in 2006, having relocated to the Gold Coast for university, Chris was elected as Youth Premier. Chris is only the second person in the history of the program to have held the roles of both Youth Premier and Youth Governor. In 2007, Chris became a member of the Youth Parliament Executive as a Mentor and has reprised this role in 2008.

Being Youth Governor is a significant honour and it is undoubtedly deserved.
